Minecraft Data Packs
Data packs add new recipes, loot tables, and game mechanics to vanilla Minecraft. No mods required - works natively with the game.
What are Data Packs?
Data packs are a vanilla Minecraft feature that lets you customize game behavior. They're perfect for adding tweaks without needing a mod loader.
Data packs can modify:
- Crafting Recipes - Add or change how items are crafted
- Loot Tables - Modify what mobs drop and chest contents
- Advancements - Add custom achievements and rewards
- World Generation - Change biome distribution and structures
- Functions - Run commands automatically
Data Packs vs Mods
Data packs and mods serve different purposes:
Data Packs:
- Drop directly into your world folder - no mod loader needed
- Limited to vanilla mechanics (can't add new blocks or mobs)
- Only needed on the server - clients stay vanilla
- Usually survive Minecraft updates without breaking
- Minimal performance impact
Mods:
- Require a mod loader (Forge, Fabric, etc.)
- Can add entirely new content, mechanics, and systems
- Usually needed on both server and client
- Often break when Minecraft updates until the author patches them
- Can significantly impact performance
Data packs are perfect for vanilla-compatible tweaks. Use mods when you need entirely new content or mechanics.
