Minecraft Mods
Mods add new content, features, and improvements to Minecraft. Install them easily with GDLauncher's built-in mod browser.
What are Mods?
Mods (short for modifications) are community-created additions that change or enhance Minecraft. They can add new blocks, items, mobs, dimensions, game mechanics, and much more.
Popular types of mods include:
- Content - New items, blocks, dimensions, and mobs
- Tech - Machines, automation, and power systems
- Magic - Spells, rituals, and magical systems
- Quality of Life - UI improvements and convenience features
- Performance - FPS optimization and faster loading
Mod Loaders Explained
Mods require a mod loader to run. The main options are:
- Forge - The original mod loader (2011). Largest mod library with complex mods like Tinkers' Construct, Create, and Twilight Forest. Slower to update for new Minecraft versions.
- Fabric - Lightweight and fast-updating. Popular for performance mods and newer Minecraft versions. Large mod library on Modrinth.
- NeoForge - A 2023 fork of Forge by the original development team. Modern improvements with better performance. Increasingly the standard for Forge-style mods on 1.20.4+.
- Quilt - A Fabric fork focused on community governance. Compatible with most Fabric mods plus its own additions.
Most mods are made for either Forge/NeoForge OR Fabric - not both. Always check which loader a mod requires before installing.
Mod Compatibility
Key things to know about mod compatibility:
- Mods must match your Minecraft version exactly (a 1.20.1 mod won't work on 1.20.4)
- All players on a server usually need the same mods installed
- Some mods are "client-side only" (like minimaps) and don't need server installation
- Mods can conflict with each other - check mod pages for known incompatibilities
- Major Minecraft updates (like 1.13, 1.17, 1.20) often break mods until authors update them
